Importance of Rubber Bands

A common question asked is “why do orthodontists use rubber bands with braces?”

Rubber bands are an important part of the orthodontic treatment.  They provide the connective force necessary to move the teeth and jaw into the proper alignment.  Rubber bands are typically used in the final phase of treatment and are used to adjust bite and jaw position.  This ensures the patients teeth will line up properly.  While brackets, wires, and ligatures are responsible for moving teeth along the gum line and the angle at which they point away from the gums, rubber bands pull the jaw forward or backward in order to line up your top and bottom rows of teeth to improve your smile and make your teeth fit together comfortably when you bite down.

Patients should follow directions carefully when wearing rubber bands, doing this ensures treatment stays on schedule and provides optimal results.
